The top seed had a 4-1 lead in the last set, but blew it and had 5 match points at 6-5 up but against all odds, Monfils takes the first of two match points in a last set tie breaker. Also preventing Federer from becoming the first man to have made the finals in every Masters 1000 tournament possible.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was born on the 17th April 1985 in Le Mans, France. He reached a career high of 6 in the world on the 17th November 2008, at the end of his best year. In 2008 he reached his only Grand Slam Final and lost to Djokovic in the final. He has also reached one Semi-Final and two Quarter Finals. He has won his only ATP 1000 masters final, other than this he has reached 1 Semi-Final. His record in grand slams is 37-13:15-4 in the Australian Open, 6-3 in the French Open, 9-3 in Wimbledon and 7-3 in the US Open.

Jurgen Melzer was born on the 22nd May 1981 in Vienna, Austria. He has had a long career but has only shown his best form in 2010 as he has reached a top rank of world number 12 on the 11th October in singles and 6th rank in September. As well as improvement in rankings he has improved in Grand Slams reaching 1 Semi-Final and 2 4th rounds, when before this year he hadn't bettered the third round. His record in grand slams is 42-34:8-8 in the Australian Open, 18-8 in the French Open, 10-9 in Wimbledon and 11-9 in the US Open.

Nadal has retired from the ATP Paris 1000 tournament next week, breaking a run of participating in 18 consecutive ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. He has retired due to medical issues but should play at the ATP World Tour Finals.
